Return to normalcy in Libya is in Tunisia’s interest, says Mohamed Ennaceur

“It is in Tunisia’s interest that normalcy returns to Libya, given the links that unite the two countries,” interim President of the Republic, Mohamed Ennaceur said at his meeting Wednesday with Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ghassan Salamé.

The President of the Republic welcomed the efforts of Salamé and his initiatives to find a political solution to the Libyan crisis, the Presidency of the Republic said in its statement.

Ennaceur reiterated Tunisia’s support to the UNSMIL Chief, as well as his support for his action plan in Libya, so as to avoid the bloodshed in Libya and allow the return to the negotiating table and the resumption of the political process.

This is to allow Libya to resume its natural place and the region to recover its stability.

For his part, Ghassan Salamé extended the UN Secretary-General’s thanks to the interim President of the Republic and the Tunisian authorities for the daily co-operation established with the UN delegation in Libya.

Ghassan Salamé hailed Tunisia’s constant support for UNSMIL to facilitate its mission, while expressing hope that this support will continue in the future in the interest of Libya, Tunisia and the region.

Ghassan Salamé briefed Mohamed Ennaceur about the outcome of his contacts and his recent activities in Libya and abroad to reach an international consensus on the proposals he has presented to find a way out of the Libyan crisis and bring stability to the region.

Salamé emphasised, in this vein, the encouraging position on the Libyan issue he perceived from the leaders of the G7 at their meeting in Biarritz (France) from August 24 to 26.
